Freelancers Union
Founded in 1995, Freelancers Union is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of independent workers. From 2003 to 2018, I served as the copy-side Creative Director and steward of the organization’s brand voice, working directly with founder Sara Horowitz.
Much of that work focused on one of the most urgent challenges freelancers faced: gaining access to affordable, dependable health insurance. I developed subway campaigns, digital communications, collateral, and advocacy messaging that helped explain the problem, build public support, and make the case that independent workers deserved meaningful access to healthcare benefits.
The subway posters became the most visible expression of that effort, using clear, direct language to turn a complicated policy issue into something immediate and human. Sara later told me that legislators in Albany would quote lines from the posters during policy discussions—one of the most meaningful compliments I have received, and evidence that the work was helping move the conversation beyond advertising and into the rooms where change could happen.
